Europe and other countries can learn from Ukraine's experience of defending itself against Iranian drones

Ukraine offered to share its experience with defending against Iranian-made drones, following retaliation attacks launched by Iran against Western military bases in the region.

The joint US-Israel strike on Iran is drawing in European allies with retaliatory strikes against military bases close by. During the night a UK base in Cyprus was hit by an Iranian-made drone.

Hours before, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered his expertise in this area.

“We are ready to share this experience and help those nations that helped Ukraine this winter and throughout this war,” Zelenskyy stated on social media.

Ukraine has been repeatedly attacked with Shahed-type drones, which Russia began producing itself based on the original Iranian version. In January, over 4000 of such fixed-winged suicide drones were launched against Ukraine.

“The situation in the Middle East shows how difficult it is to provide 100% protection against missiles and ‘shahed’ drones,” noted Zelenskyy, adding that the Ukrainian experience and expertise is now irreplaceable for Europe.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer already took Zelenskyy up on the offer, saying that the UK “will bring experts from Ukraine together with our own experts to help Gulf partners shoot down Iranian drones”.
